Kangana Ranaut is a Bollywood actress who debuted in the film Gangster co-starring with Emraan Hashmi. Kangana Ranaut comes from the hill town of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. She completed most of her schooling in Shimla. She has been studying science (medicine) and engineering, however these subjects failed to interest her. In a passion for acting, Kangana travelled to Delhi, where she did several theatre shows. After this, she decided to take another step ahead. She came to Mumbai, and stayed with her cousin Aditya Pancholi, to try her luck in movies. She was unsuccessful for quite a while, until she received the offer for "Gangster".

This event occurred in September 2005, while Kangana and her friends were sipping coffee at a cafe in Mumbai. Director Anurag Basu, from the fame of "Murder", decided to call her for an audition. Fortunately, they liked her work and decided to cast her as the main female protagonist in the film.
